11-24-2017 sharing

Jeremiah 7:25-26 25 From the time your ancestors left Egypt until now, day after day, again and again I sent you my servants the prophets. 26 But they did not listen to me or pay attention. They were stiff-necked and did more evil than their ancestors.’

Isaiah is most famous for his descriptions of God’s Messiah, among which is this passage from Isaiah 53:4-6
Jeremiah wrote Jeremiah and Lamentations
37:1-14  Israel had failed, but God had not forgotten them and would one day restore and redeem them. This hope in an eventual restoration is vividly portrayed in the famous story of the“valley of dry bones”

Come Alive (Dry Bones) [Live] - Official Lyric Video

Daniel 6; Daniel in the Den of Lions.

Hosea (Persevering Love)
Joel (The Coming of the Day of Yahweh)
Amos (Judgment for Abused Privilege)
Obadiah (Poetic Justice)
Jonah 2  (Fleeing From God’s Will) Jonah's prayer 4:2
Micah (Who Is Like God?)
Nahum (The Doom of Nineveh)
Habakkuk (Solution to Perplexity)
It concerns the problems of his faith in the face of two apparent difficulties: (1) Why did God permit the increasing evil in Judah to go unpunished (1:2-4)? And how could a Holy God (1:13) use sinful nations like Babylon as His source of judgment (1:12-2:1)?
Zephaniah (Blessing Through Judgment)
Haggai (Encouragement)
Zechariah (the Jealousy of Yahweh)
Malachi (Repent and Return)

The Major Prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The Minor Prophets are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
The Major Prophets are described as “major” because their books are longer and the content has broad, even global implications. The Minor Prophets are described as “minor” because their books are shorter (although Hosea and Zechariah are almost as long as Daniel) and the content is more narrowly focused.

(1) warning of impending judgment because of the nations’ sinfulness; (2) a description of the sin; (3) a description of the coming judgment; (4) a call for repentance; and (5) a promise of future deliverance.

We read of Christ’s birth in Isaiah and Micah. We learn of Christ’s atoning sacrifice in Isaiah. We read of Christ’s return in Ezekiel, Daniel, and Zechariah. We learn of God’s holiness, wrath, grace, and mercy in all of the Major and Minor Prophets. For that, they are most worthy of our attention and study.

The preexilic prophets came to warn of impending judgment. Obadiah wrote to or about Edom. Amos, Hosea and Joel wrote to the northern kingdom. Isaiah, Micah, Nahum, Habbakkuk, Zephaniah and Jeremiah wrote to warn Judah.

The exilic prophets wrote to assure the people that God would restore them to the land. Ezekiel and Daniel wrote from Babylon to encourage the people that God would restore the nation.

The post exilic prophets wrote to assure the people that God would deal with the restored community according to the same principles. They might have been tempted to think that because Babylonia had defeated Israel, the Babylonian gods were superior to Yahweh. One of the postexilic prophet's jobs was to point out that Yahweh was superior and the only reason Israel was defeated was because Yahweh was disciplining them. Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi were writing to the people who had returned to Jerusalem from Babylon.

9-8-2017 sharing; Joshua and more

Last time we talk about Moses, how he led the Israelites cross red sea and out of Egypt.

However, their faith in God failed them and they refused to march forward to take possession of the land of Canaan. It was a failure that resulted in God's judgment, condemning the Israelites to forty years of wilderness wandering. Moses die in Mount Nebo, looking at promise land.

A new generation of Israelites, hardened by the years in the wilderness and spiritually strengthened by living in obedience to the Law of Yahweh's holy covenant, were prepared to march forward in faith to claim the Promised Land.

Led by God's anointed leader, Joshua, these holy warriors obediently placed their lives and the future of their children in the hands of their Holy God and Divine King. Their victory not only established Israel as a holy nation but advanced God's plan for mankind's ultimate salvation. We'll briefly talk about 9 out of 12 Historical books in Old Testament.

Three main roles, the Lord, the leader, and the people.
The deliverance from Egypt was only in preparation for the enjoyment of Canaan; we are brought out of sin so that we might be into abundant life.

Joshua; Conquest of the Promised Land (1:1-12:24), Allotment of the Tribal Lands (13:1-22:34), Israel's Future in the Promised Land (23:1-24:33).

Judges & Ruth, the book of Judges powerfully demonstrates the chaos that can arise when sin reigns in people’s hearts. In contrast, the book of Ruth offers a message of redemption and hope following disorder. Set in a time when everyone “did what was right in his own eyes,” both books work together to highlight God’s faithfulness in the midst of Israel's disobedience.

The book of
1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles: the kings of Judah & Israel, record the history of God’s people from the time of the Judges to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.

1 Samuel 8:4-9 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 4 於是,以色列的長老一起到拉瑪去見撒母耳, 5 說:「你年紀大了,你的兒子不效法你。

1 Chronicles 28:3 But God said unto me, ‘Thou shalt not build a house for My name, because thou hast been a man of war and hast shed blood.’

1 Kings 6:1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord.

Exodus - 2

Moses the only prophet sees God face to face.

let's continue on the second part of the Exodus 15:22 - 40:38, plus Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, those four books together with Genesis, we call it, the Five Books of Moses, also known as the books of the Law because they contain the laws and instruction given by the Lord through Moses to the people of Israel.
Moses wrote them during the 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died within sight of the Promised Land on Mount Nebo.
Often time God turn bad into good and the time we learn something from.

從紅海到西奈山 from the sea to mount Sinai.(15:22 - 18:27)
Moses on the mountain and made his covenant with Israel.(19:1 - 24:18)
建造會幕 building tabernacle(25:1 - 40:38)

How weak is the human beings; once Israelites out of Egypt, out of difficulties, they thank God, they praise, nevertheless, when things couldn't satisfy them (lack of water and food, when Moses was up on Mount Sinai for forty days), we doubt about His existence, complained to the leader, we even seek for other god’s help.

How the people of Israelite promise the Lord.
And all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.” And Moses returned the words of the people unto the Lord.
And Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments; and all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the Lord hath said will we do.”

Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai while God appears in the Tent of Meeting, dictating to Moses his specifications regarding the Jewish ceremonial laws in extraordinarily detail.

Moses and Aaron themselves disobey God. God instructs Moses to speak to a rock and command it to produce water. Moses, instead, hits the rock angrily with his staff.
God appoints Joshua to eventually succeed Moses as the people’s leader.

The Book of Deuteronomy begins in the final, fortieth year of Israel’s wandering in the desert. Moses restates many of the social laws and rules of conduct outlined in Leviticus, adding a few new laws, such as the requirement for the Israelite to cancel debts every seven years.

Why is "I am the Lord your God" repeat over and over again in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy .

Lord give laws about offerings, priesthood, clean and unclean food, holidays, spy on cannon (promise land), Balaam's prophesy, Joshua as the new leader,

There are all the laws for to build a country, Civil Laws, Ceremonial Laws and Moral Laws in detail.

Deuteronomy 31 The Law Is To Be Read Every Seven Years.

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Songs of Moses: Exodus 15, Deuteronomy 32
Deuteronomy 33: Moses bless 12 tribes not Simeon (西緬).

Many times of complain about the Lord and leadership.

How important is the leadership? How to cooperate and support them, it is a mutual mutual relationship.

Israel’s wandering in the desert can be seen as the nation’s adolescence—a period of education and growth following the nation’s birth in the exodus from Egypt and the events at Mount Sinai.

"I know and I'll do it later!" my teenage sons always say so.

Exodus - 1

In real life we may be physically slaved, bad habit, anger, jealousness, internet and etc. only by the power of God, we can get out of it.

No Longer Slaves

Moses wrote the first five books of the bible; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
Last time we talked about Joseph in the first book of bible, Genesis, let's continue to read the second book of the bible, Exodus about the story of Moses.

Age of Moses when called by God, Exodus 7:7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Moses refuse God's calling.

Exodus 4:10-17

10 And Moses said unto the Lord, “O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore nor since Thou hast spoken unto Thy servant; but I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue.” 11 And the Lord said unto him, “Who hath made man’s mouth? Or who maketh the dumb or deaf, or the seeing or the blind? Have not I, the Lord? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth and teach thee what thou shalt say.” 13 And he said, “O my Lord, send, I pray Thee, by the hand of him whom Thou wilt send.” 14 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee; and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak unto him and put words in his mouth; and I will be with thy mouth and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people; and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.”

Exodus

Why did God harden Pharaoh’s heart? Does Pharaoh has his own will?
The pharaoh doesn't even concern about his own people.

Exodus 1 以色列人受欺壓  the Israelites Oppressed in Egypt.

The Birth of Moses

The Burning Bush, The Mission of Moses

Moses Given Powers

Israel’s Labor Increased

God Promises Action

Exodus 7 亞倫和摩西面見法老 “I Will Stretch Out My Hand”

Aaron’s Rod Becomes a Serpent, Water Is Turned to Blood

Frogs over the Land, The Plague of Insects (Exodus 8)
The Plague of Pestilence, Boils, Hail (Exodus 9)
The Plague of Locusts, Darkness over the Land (Exodus 10)
The Plague of the firstborn (Exodus 11)
Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread (Exodus 12)

Consecration of the Firstborn, God Leads the People (Pillar of cloud & fire) (Exodus 13)

Pharaoh in Pursuit, The Sea Is Divided (Exodus 14)

The Song of Moses and Israel (Exodus 15:1-21)
