Finally I get to have the chance to lead the worship for my new fellowship.

I can't wait to share songs with them.

Originally, I was only sign up for the first meeting on October and then I spot the date, 9-22, is my son's birthday, so I said to myself, I must have this one too.

There's time when I look into the mirror, I said to myself, who is this? I don't like you, look at all the gray hairs and wrinkles and I don't sing well and I cannot even play any instrument, such and such, so and so.

Two weeks ago we baptized one of the resident in the rehabilitation center, right after the baptism, of corse, we congrats him become a brother in Lord and we asked him that now that you are baptized, where the Lord Jesus, he answered, "here, with his hands touched his heart".

earpieces

I don’t really promote of using earpieces, often time, you heard me, as a mom, saying, “don’t use the earpieces, it’ll damage your hearing, take them off please.”

But lately, myself, start to use it a lot, at work, why?

Trying to block out all the noises around, though, I still, can, clearly, hear them all.

Therefore, if you just have to use it, please don’t turn the volume too high and don’t use it for too long.

After all, you need to communicate with people face to face.

Wonder what I am listening to? Worship songs and audio bible and classical music!

Proverbs 3:6

I receive an email from our fellowship’s leader for our coming September meeting, here’s the part of the email content, [As we delve into meditation, let us meditate on Proverbs 3:6:" In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths."]

And I said to myself, how come this particular bible verse looks so familiar to me, and I found that what I wrote in the reply-all email to our fellowships yesterday,

⁵ Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding;

⁶ in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.]

And also there was one time, what the bible verses that he shared in the fellowship were exactly same as my teaching in the nursery Sunday school class, again, I’m not surprised but awed in His presence.

On this past Sunday’s baptism, I also get to meet a beautiful family, they used to come to our church regularly for years, they involved in many of the services in our church.

As I went greeting to their family, saying, I miss them much, and happy to see them, and when we are going to meet them again, and she replied smiling, only on this special occasion, and then, I said, we should have the baptism every week, we all laugh.

My younger son was in hers and her husband’s Sunday school class, she was very pregnant when she was teaching my son’s Sunday school class, and so, technically, her son is also my son’s Sunday school teacher.

The 36-Hour Day

I first was attracted by the title of the book.

36-Hour Day, that must be a long day, we often said, 24 hours a day is too little to do something more.

When face a dementia patient, either is your love one or as a paid caregiver.

How to cope with physically and emotionally effects on taking care of that person, for there are many challenges to come.

Learn and prepare ahead and give yourself respite as needed, even you feel guilty, it's better to do so before you break down.

A practical and updated handbook with people who understand pretty much you are being through, either are the doctors, professional caregivers or the family of the dementia patients.

When encountered great difficulties, some are defeated, some are motivated to achieve something to help others.

Though, some said, we are playing God’s role; using technology to modify human genes and more.

Right or wrong? Hard to define, depends upon many factors. 

Baptism

Two pairs of lovely twins were baptized yesterday.

When the first one of them got on stage and testimony before the baptism, she showed a picture of the two pairs of twins and their mom when they were little, that’s when I couldn’t hold my tears anymore.

One of the twins’ mom lost her life to cancer.

I had never had a picture taken with her or visited her when she was fighting with cancer, I wish I can give her a hug now, physically.

May the Lord continue protect her love ones.

Never can forget how she pray for me and the kids right before she was going to lead the worship time for the children from age 3 to 5 at church, I was her helper.

And her positive attitude and genuine smile toward everyone and everything.

Something terrible

Used to buy some potatoes that it never sprouted, even I didn't consume it for a long time, I was worried about it must be soaked in some kind of chemical to prevent sprouting.

Since then I was kind of hesitating buying potatoes until lately I bought a five-pound-bag-potatoes which are from a different farm, OK Produce, today I found it was sprouting; my feeling was mix with sadness and happiness why? I was sad; because I had to remove the sprouted parts, for the sprouted potatoes are poisonous, I was happy; because I can sure that it must not be soaked in chemical also I can plant the potatoes.

And then I washed the potatoes and put it in the steamer, after done cooking, I said to myself, oh my! I forgot to cut off the sprouted parts before I cook them, now that it was all ruined.

The almost runaway chocolate cake.

I changed and doubled the original ingredients, when it was baking, I opened the oven to check, and it almost overflowed.

It tastes good, and my son said, it is an Asian cake, because it is half the sweetness, to me, this is already too sweet.

And he who doesn't like oatmeal, said, I wonder why you have oatmeal in this cake? 

Well, I just have to find some ways to sneak in something that either of my sons don't really appreciate in my cooking.

Bake potatoes with lots of cheese.

Main ingredients, potatoes, cheeses, onions, garlic, be creative and add in some other ingredients to it.

I tried figs (very little) once, the kids didn't notice it.

I also tried diced tomatoes, it was okish.

One time I had eggplant in it, yuck, this is disgusting, said my older one, and he won't have any.

This time I put chopped celery in it, we all love it and he said it smells so good, like chicken.

And next time, I’ll not just have the cheese on the top but mix some cheese with the potatoes, so when serve the potatoes, it will form together better.

Oh! I just bought some artichoke yesterday, and you what will happen next!

p.s. steam and cut the potatoes and stir fry vegs and garlic prior baking.

Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

3 cups white sugar

2 cups wheat flour

1/2 cup of oatmeal

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3 teaspoons baking powder

3 teaspoons baking soda

4 eggs

3 cup milk

1/2 cup coconut oil

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 °F.

In a large bowl, stir together the sugar, flour, oatmeal, cocoa, baking powder and baking soda. Add the eggs, milk, and oil until well blend. Pour evenly into the prepared pans.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cake tests done with a toothpick. 

People wait in line

Friday after the fellowship meeting, on the way down the stairs, I was talking with one of the sister and then another sister, the new comer, interrupt our conversation just like that, she kept talking to the sister that I was having conversation with, like I’m invisible. I meant, I’m not upset or what, but that was just awkward.

Oh well, there are plenty of people wait in line to talk to me.

It happened again

We had our bimonthly service at the rehabilitation center this morning, I met a male senior that also from Taiwan, as usual, after I chatted with him a little, bravely, I asked him do you want to know more about our God, and do you want to be baptized becoming a God’s son like us, become a Christian… and of course, I briefly told him about our God and such, he answered all “yes” to those questions.

So I told the person who our church been authorized to perform baptism, but to my surprise, she said that she will not to baptize him today, instead, she said, next time when come here again which is two weeks later.

Most of the residents at the rehabilitation center can understand 100% our conversations, and depends upon which of the part of their brain were impaired, some of them part of their body cannot not move well, some can hardly talk well.

So, what are we waiting for? I shared my experiences at other nursing home before with this particular person, there were, not just one but couples of the nursing home residents that said yes to baptism but not been baptized right away. Next time when they ready to perform the baptism, those yes persons, refused to be baptized.

One time, my son said, do you guys just take advantage of their situation? Like, they cannot go anywhere but stay in the facility so they are easier to accept the Christianity. I am not wholly agree with him, yes, their freedom are restrained physically but not mentally or spiritually, right?

What will you do? Or what do you prefer? Or what do you think it should be?

For example, when you receive an email from one of the fellowship member for requesting prayer on something, and then individual members reply the email with prayers.

But should we use reply only to the sender or use reply-all to all the recipients?

For me, I prefer just reply to the sender only, that’s your prayer for that member.

It’s OK for this particular member to use reply-all for any further updates.

However, my son, do have a different thought about it, “so that, what about in the prayer meeting?”

I recently take a part-time job as a freelance blogger for one of my friends’ company she works for. Actually, I met her boss and my friend through some kind of special occasion that I shared before in my other blogs.

I’m really thanking to have this opportunity, I’m not a professional, pray for that I can have the wisdom from God and try my best for this extraordinary chance.  Also that I can handle it well, so it will not to burn me out while I’m a single full time mom with a full time job.

Actually, I have something else that I’d like to share about this job, not long before my friend called me for this blogger thing, I had a dream that her boss called my son for a job opening, which my son had an interview before with her boss.

But instead her boss called, my friend called, and rather than called my son for a job, I was called for a job.

Another truth is, this part-time blogger is deeply involved with the translation between English and Chinese, therefore, there’s a great deal of time that I have to ask some helps from my sons.

Thank God that they can help me, thank God to let me know how much that I need help, how much that I need to seriously improve my English and thank God for through this event that I can have so much time to communicate with my sons, though, there’s a lot of embarrass moments;  like, “mom! Your English needs a good deal of learning!”

Lately, many people that I know need prayers, please has less people in trouble and more people willing to comfort and support others, also pray for the people who are in difficulty would willing to receive others’ caring and speak out for help.

Panic

Thursday night, when I was preparing the PowerPoint and downloading worship songs for the Friday’s sharing at habitation center, something went wrong with my computer, the speakers suddenly went silent.

First I tried to checking here and there, do everything that I know of, it wouldn’t work, desperately; I called my son for help, and still cannot find anything wrong.

Should I prayed for it, I thought, so I prayed and then I remembered what one of my friend who is a computer geek taught me what to do when something wrong with the computer, just restart the computer .

It worked!

Exodus - 2

Moses the only prophet sees God face to face.

let's continue on the second part of the Exodus 15:22 - 40:38, plus Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, those four books together with Genesis, we call it, the Five Books of Moses, also known as the books of the Law because they contain the laws and instruction given by the Lord through Moses to the people of Israel. 
Moses wrote them during the 40 years of wandering in the desert, Moses died within sight of the Promised Land on Mount Nebo.

How weak is the human beings; once Israelites out of Egypt, out of difficulties, they thank God, they praise, nevertheless, when things couldn't satisfy them (lack of water and food, when Moses was up on Mount Sinai for forty days), we doubt about His existence, complained to the leader, we even seek for other god’s help. 

How the people of Israelite promise the Lord.

The Book of Deuteronomy begins in the final, fortieth year of Israel’s wandering in the desert. Moses restates many of the social laws and rules of conduct outlined in Leviticus, adding a few new laws, such as the requirement for the Israelite to cancel debts every seven years. 

Why is "I am the Lord your God" repeat over and over again in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy .

Lord give laws about offerings, priesthood, clean and unclean food, holidays, spy on cannon (promise land), Balaam's prophesy, Joshua as the new leader, 

There are all the laws for to build a country, Civil Laws, Ceremonial Laws and Moral Laws in detail.

Deuteronomy 31 The Law Is To Be Read Every Seven Years.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Many times of complain about the Lord and leadership.

How important is the leadership? How to cooperate and support them, it is a mutual mutual relationship.

Israel’s wandering in the desert can be seen as the nation’s adolescence—a period of education and growth following the nation’s birth in the exodus from Egypt and the events at Mount Sinai.

"I know and I'll do it later!" my teenage sons always say so.

Workshop for Evangelism

What is evangelism? 

Spread the Christian gospel by public preaching or personal witness.

That's probably is the definition that we can google it, it seems like a big word, for most of us. Spreading God's love through our daily lives, by caring, comforting or anything concerns others' benefits.

When would I know the right situation to share about God? 

There’s no a fix rule about it, any time is and is not a good time to share your faith to others, it sounds confuse, right? I know. 

As for my experiences from serving at rehabilitation center, every time I see a new coming ( resident), I introduced myself as part of the church serving group, we'll later sing some songs etc. And of course, I always ask them, are you a Christian or have you ever been to church? If the answer is, no, I may then ask him or her, do you want to know about God or do you want to be baptized, becoming a Christian? Some of them really surprised me by giving the yes answer right away. I believe, as long as you have a willing heart to serve in God's love, the Holy Spirit will guide you through the process and don't be upset about the no answer.

How do we bring up the topic of Christianity and share the gospel with friends without feeling nervous or uncomfortable? 

Normally, I’ll bring up the topic through inviting them to our church's special event, like father's day BBQ. Other times, I’ll just simply be their friend by listening to their stories and find the chance to share mind personal encounters with them.

What should we not do when trying to evangelize? 

Never fight with them over your faith or use so called Christian terminologies or share the gospel with our non-Christian friends by shoving the gospel down their throats.

How do we share the gospel with our non-Christian friends without shoving the truth down their throats? 

Just be their friends by supporting, or be a companion, I guess.

How do you spread the word and have it actually impact people? 

How you act is the best testimony. 

How long until everyone knows about Jesus? 

I truly have no clue. It probably take a long time. That’s how each of us are so important in the role of evangelism.

(As I shared a while ago, some people is easier to accept Christ, some takes a long time, how long? I’ve heard, like, couples of decades, so, keep praying and never give up.)

What are differences and similarities between evangelism in the present and in Biblical times?

Good question, I believe the evangelism is the same only the ways to evangelism are vary.

Besides, preaching face to face, we can use some modern technologies, email, blog, Facebook, video, classes and so on.

How much should the church imitate God's prophets? 

Big question, first of all, how to Identify a True Prophet?

Acts 2:17-18 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 And on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days My Spirit, and they shall prophesy.

How can you be more confident in your faith?

By praising, praying to the Lord, serving others, reading the bible and the like.

But a lot time, once the hands and eyes are free, I cannot help myself to browsing around either on the computer or doing some things else while I take advantage of this.

Tuesday

This morning, again, I woke up with a mindset of, yeah it’s Sunday!

Then, again, I realized that it is not Sunday, it is Tuesday.

I think God is trying reminding me something, Psalm 118:24 – This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Live our everyday lives with joy for it His command, Psalm 98:4 – “Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth; Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.”

There may be difficulty or sickness lie ahead of us, oh Lord, may Your Holy Spirit be with us and fight and dealing with us together. And I want to praise, worship, listen, and learn from you, not just in Sunday but every day of my live.

Hometown

Saw two different brands of sailfish floss, both have same ingredients, both from Taiwan, one from the city of Kaohsiung the other from the city of Pingtung.

I was struggling on which one that I should buy, I lived in both cities before, but I stayed in Pingtung the longest, so, often time, I consider Pingtung, my hometown.

When I was little, my dad’s job require relocation, at the beginning, we moved around with him, later, at some point, we stayed in Pingtung, though, my dad still relocation once in a while.

I feel obligate to buy the product from my hometown.

Finally, I bought this from Kaohsiung, only because the price is really good; feel kind of bad about it.

Benz

The other day at a store I saw and overheard the conversation between a senior lady and the store worker.

She still works and drives herself around in a beautiful Mercedes-Benz and makes her own decision 

Figs

I got some figs from coworker, so I thought that I should share some with my friends.

When the figs are almost gone, I felt kind of miss those figs that I shared.

On Sunday, my friend shared some of the figs that she got from her friend; one of my senior friends brought some more figs for me too.

I’m so blessed and appreciate the friendship from them.

Also from my friend’s suggestion by frozen the figs, it tastes great.

And since my kids don’t really like eating figs, so, I make banana-fig-half &half ice cream so as to share the figs with them.

The ice cream tastes very good and it got some pretty pink color from the figs, again, without adding any sugar of artificial ingredients.

Next time I’ll try mango-fig-half & half ice cream.

National day out

I don’t quite remember since when we go to this National Night Out at our city each year. 

We always have fun time, walk around, browse all the booths, get some free gifts, watch the live performance and eat some not so healthy food (hot dogs, soda and colorful Popsicle…)

This year I got a build your own tip tap toe kit from Home Depot. But when I asked for one from the worker, she seemed not very happy and very inpatient.

Spider

I found spider, cricket, month, mosquito, and fly in our home, so, our spider must be a vegetarian.

Monday

This morning when I awoke, I thought, it’s Sunday, church day, and then I opened my eyes, suddenly remembered that today is MONDAY, I must have MONDAY SYNDROME.

Books

Time flies, time is limited, you can never borrow time from someone else, even they willing to, and it’s only fair that we all have the same 24 hours a day to spend.

A quote from Steve Job I read days ago that I’d like to share with you, “What is the most expensive bed in the world? Sick bed …

That’s so true; money can buy a lot of things but not sickness.

I haven’t borrowed books from library for some time, lately, I tried to browse through the new books section to find some book(s) to read, I felt like that I ­­wanted to borrow bunch of books at one time, in the end I borrowed 2 books, I cannot wait to finish them soon and share some thoughts with you.

Another new thing that I do, I tried to do exercises when I am watching the TV programs and then do some reading when the commercials’ are on. Hope that I can take the best use of this limited time.

parking ticket

This time I was not so lucky, I and my friend didn’t realize it until we found that we both got a street sweeping ticket, after visited a friend.

Well, we all had a fun time together, so, I just took as a donation to the city, except, it’s not the city that I live in. 

Grocer outlet

I got a fairy good deal on these cookies, but its way past the best sell date, should I report them? 2 bag of the cookies only cost 97¢.

The date that I purchased was, 07-31-2017, and the best-selling date is, 06-23-2017.

Didn’t pay attention the date when I bought, already consumed one bag without any problem, next time I should be more aware about it.

English panel discussion

The HarvestLA student ministry is going to have a Workshop for Evangelism; a panel discussion for answering students' questions on faith. Hoping that through this panelists’ sharing of gospel would help on the faith growth on students.

I’m gratefully to be invited to be one of the parents on the panel, though, we don’t need to do a separate testimony on the panel discussion, and still, I’d like to say something about it.

Before my sharing, I have to tell you that I am not a native English speaker, so bear with me and listen carefully, OK?

Three years ago, I shared my testimony at mandarin and Taiwanese congregation, I did think about sharing and preparing an English version of my testimony to share in English congregation too. It's like dream come true nevertheless, it is three years late.

I am alone yet not alone is the title that I'm going to share today, I before was just the exact opposite of this, meaning that even I was with a big crowd of people or even surrounding with the people whom I'm familiar with, I still feel lonely.

I didn't know how to communicate with others, most of the time I didn't even want to, I had no confidence in myself at all, not mention to speak in public or stand or sit on the stage, in this case.

Now I know wherever I am or whatever I do, God is watching over me and say, "Hey, Alice, you're doing a good job!" 

Lastly, two more things to share, if you have not yet baptized become a believer, I want to encourage you to get to know more about our God, it's no loss to learn something new and if you are baptized, a believer then I strongly recommend you commit, not once a year but at least once a month or once a week of volunteering to serve people in need. You'll be surprised on how you can learn and grow by serving others.

I do have one more thing to say, don’t be scared by serving others, you are not necessary to go far or do something uncomfortable, like stand on the stage, but by warmly welcome a new comer or a church member, simple as that.
