Sundog

“ Sundogs are formed when light passes through hexagonal plate crystals of ice, suspended in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds located at altitudes of around 20,000 feet (6,000 meters) and higher, up to 40,000 feet (12,000 meters).“

The strange phenomenon is first known to have been recorded by Aristotle between 384 and 322 BC. The Greek philosopher wrote: 'Two mock suns rose with the sun and followed it all through the day until sunset'. He noted that they were always to the sun's side and never rose above or below it.”

Sun dogs typically appear as a pair of subtly colored patches of light, around 22° to the left and right of the Sun, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Sun. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but are not always obvious or bright.”

What Does It Mean When You See a Sundog? Probably the biggest difference between the two is that a rainbow usually signals an end to the rain, while a sundog often means that rain is on the way—often within the next 24 hours.”
