american catch

Author, Paul Greenberg talks about three of the seafood, New York oysters, gulf shrimp, and Alaskan salmon to tell the surprising story of why Americans no longer eat from local waters.

I’m so astonished to realize that U.S. has the most sea ocean property, and used to consume them locally majority. Now lots of reasons, the pollution from oil spill and mining, the cost of process fee and so forth, we have rely on other country, mainly from Asia, like China’s seafood farms or after they process those seafood from U.S. then import back to us.

There’s a saying, “if you eat the food from china, you’ll die, but if you don’t eat them, you’ll die even faster.” Sad to state that for farming, firstly, of course, they want the most profits from it so they use something, like, chemicals to either let them growing faster or unlikely to get sick.

I really don’t know which one is more harmful, the pollutants or those additives. Besides farming, we send those wild caught seafood abroad for processing in order to reduce the cost, but can you sure, they don’t add or use something bad to our environment or health. Due to lack of manpower in those countries, only few percentage of the seafood is being control or exam before exporting. And also the environments’ change, water, air and other pollutions everywhere, it is almost no guarantee for health safety.

Benefits for now or for the thousands years later, or you won’t see the damages just now. Glad to know there are more and more people and associations notice it and try hard to rescue it.

I also learn about those seafood are not just provide more protein than other land animals can. Oysters has its Ecosystem Roles, are filter feeders, consuming phytoplankton and improving water quality while they filter their food from the water. As generations of oysters settle on top of each other and grow, they form reefs that provide structured habitat for many fish species and crabs. That’s truly amazing!

Genesis  1:28-30
28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
